31 March 2015

This winter had a more active season volcano-wise than is mentioned here, much more, sorry about that. Activity in Iceland, South America and Japan stand out. The Pahoa slow creep never overtook Pahoa, although there are still outbreaks north of the flow.

14 November 2014

Hawaii: The slow creep moves through Pahoa, burning one unoccupied house. This could be the slowest-motion ever of a town being overtaken by a natural event. Hopefully the damage will be more minimal than originally thought.

Karangetang, Siau Island

Japan

4 March 2015

Sakurajima volcano is kicking up - at least 7 outbursts within 24 hours. Light ash fall.

27 September 2014

Mount Ontake erupted unexpectedly, and at least 56 people were killed. The ash in some places was chest- or waist-deep. Rescuers had to race an approaching storm while helping people in the area to safety. Mount Ontake is the second highest volcano in Japan, at 10,062ft.

25 August 2014

Nishinoshima, a half square-mile, volcanically active island in Japan, has been building up lava on its eastern side. If that side collapses under the weight of the lava, waves could travel for 18 minutes to Chichijima and cause a 3ft tsunami.

Kilauea: Pu'u O'o cone: began in January 1983.

January 2013

The Pu'u O'o cone erupted.

3 October 2014

Kilauea erupts at the Pu'u O'o cone, and lava begins a slow creep to Pahoa.

26 December 2014

The lava creep has stalled less than a mile short of the Highway 130/Pahoa Village Road intersection.

18 March 2015

Pahoa is still alive and kickin', but the lava still has not crossed Highway 130. Malama Market, near the highway, will reopen after it closed its doors due to the lava threat three months ago.

Pucon - Villarica. Very active today.

May 2015

The Calbuco volcano in the Lake District in southern Chile has come to life after about a 40 years' slumber, with dramatic explosions that have caused "dirty thunderstorms," volcano-produced weather events including lightning.
