Sea ice extent - how iced a large body of water is. This has little to do with ice thickness. In judging the conditions of polar ice, thickness is very important. Still, a good cover of polar ice is a nice thing to see.
Less sea ice = more heat in the oceans.
More ocean heat = even less sea ice.
Even less sea ice = even more ocean warming.

Polar Bear Week begins!
2 June 2015
Polar bears are increasingly foraging on land-based food, which really does not offer the nutrients that they need. Especially not in the tundra, where food sources are sparse anyway. The brown bears that live in the tundra are smaller than their southern cousings because of that, and there are not as many of them. Eating a land-based diet is not a general practice among polar bears yet (and hopefully won't be a problem in the future).

Is it a reality?
Is it a concern?
Is it caused by natural events?
Is it caused by us?
And if so, how much?
What can we do?

Exactly how cold is it?

Pipes were ruptured during a deep freeze of -40° Celsius, and water flooded the streets before it could be drained. Residents were left without heat or power. High winds were the culprit as they knocked down power lines and caused the city boiler to malfunction.

Hurricane Season is over now, and it has already snowed in Alaska, the Rockies, and the Great Lakes. In North Carolina and points south, it's still mostly green, and the temps will be close to 80 degrees the next several days. But they won't stay there, and soon enough, 40 degrees will be the high in North Carolina, not the rare low.
